Probably one of the hardest choices you'll have to make when considering converting a van into a campervan is what van to go for, there are quite a few choices and if your not really into your vans then it can be a daunting thought, what van is the most reliable? what van is the safest? the most economical etc.
Below we have chosen our top 5 vans that are fit for a van life conversion.
#1 VW Transporter
The VW Transporter is one of the most solid bases to start with, unquestionable reliability very economical and very safe.
probably the only downside for many is the price, new and on the second hand used market these vans hold their value very well.
Timeless looks are also a bonus, no matter what generation you go for people are in no doubt to what it is, there is a huge following for the VW Transporter so there is always someone out there to offer help and advice and a great range of parts available.
If you don't mind a relatively small space and can live without a toilet/shower inside your van then this will always be a great choice.
#2 Mercedes Sprinter
Another firm favourite is the Mercedes Sprinter, a much larger van than the VW Transporter but one that still offers you the piece of mind when it comes to reliability and safety.
There is obviously quite a bit more work to be done on a van of this size but the results can be quite simply amazing.
you have space underneath for much larger water tanks (clean & grey) which in turn means you can have a shower/toilet etc. and not have the fear of running out of water quite so often.
with there being so much more space inside this means you have many more options when it comes to the layout, a fixed bed, a larger kitchen, a larger lounging area, a nice sized wet room and plenty of storage for food, clothes etc.
If you are comfortable with driving a van on the slightly larger side then we can highly recommend to take a look at the Mercedes Sprinter.
#3 Ford Transit
How could you not consider old faithful, the Ford Transit!
A perfect choice for a DIY campervan conversion, this van comes with a great selection of options including a long wheelbase and high-top roof for that extra space.
Reliability and safety isn't really a problem either as Ford have been building the Transit since 1965 so they've had plenty of practice.
Basically if you are looking for a nice simple, reliable van to convert into a campervan you cant go wrong with the Ford Transit and should definitely be on your list for consideration.
#4 Fiat Ducato
The Fiat Ducato is a firm favourite with many campervan/motorhome manufactures and for good reason, its a very good looking van that offers a great living space and is a pleasure to drive.
One of the main advantage's of the Fiat Ducato is the price, there is no shortage of these for sale on the used market and can be picked up for as little as £3k for a half decent one, although you should always give the van a very good inspection inside and out and make sure it has a good service history as they do tend to be used as workhorses so can be a little neglected.
Overall as long as you do your homework the Fiat Ducato is a very good option for a campervan conversion.
#5 Citroen Berlingo
Known as a "micro campervan" these little vans are perfect for those that don't require a lot of space or luxuries, if you are the type of person that enjoys parking up and spending most of the day out walking then these vans a perfect.
They do still offer enough space to have the essentials like somewhere to sit that converts into a good size bed, a small sink and fridge and even a single burner hob.
There is also ample space for storing some clothes, food and toiletries in overhead lockers.
Basically if you are looking for a no frills van that is as easy to drive and park as a car the Citroen Berlingo is definitely worth considering.
We hope this helped and gave you some inspiration and good luck with your very own van conversion if it something you are considering.
